SHOSHANNA WEINBERGER

Artist Statement​
 

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Weinberger’s work relates to her Caribbean-American background and draws strongly on the complexity of heritage and identity. Weinberger’s new body of work explores the psychology of cultural ambiguity. Solo shows include: What Makes My Hottentot so Hot at the Solo(s) Project House, Newark, (2012); Sometimes All of Me is Not Enough at Carol Jazzar Contemporary, Miami, (2012); Potbelly Pin-Ups: Out Of Many One, Woman Made Gallery, Chicago, (2014); The Otherness of Strangefruit, New Jersey City University, Jersey City (2018); invisible fruit: stories of camouflage from the periphery, Project for Empty Space, Newark, (2018). Awards/Fellowships: 2014 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant. 2015 Joan Mitchell Center, Artist-in-Residence, New Orleans. Awarded a 2016 Fellowship, New Jersey State Council on the Arts; 2017-2018, Project of Empty Space, Artist-in-Residence, Newark, NJ. Forthcoming solo exhibition is scheduled for Fall 2019, Trestle Gallery, in Brooklyn, NY.

Weinberger received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in 1995 and a MFA from Yale University School of Art, in 2003. She lives and works in Newark, New Jersey.
